In 2002, Brazil was the world's largest iron ore exporter with an annual production of over 200 Mt, of which 158 Mt was exported in 2000. The majority of this came from two regions, the Serra dos Carajás in Para State in the north, and the Quadrilatero Ferrifero further south in Minas Gerais State.
